The Games of the Small States of Europe 2023 will be held in Malta from May 28 to June 3, 2023

The Games of the Small States of Europe (GSSE) is a multi-sport event that takes place every two years and is organized by the members of the Games of the Small States of Europe Association. The GSSE is specifically designed for European countries with a small population, usually fewer than one million inhabitants.

The participating countries in the Games of the Small States of Europe are Andorra, Cyprus, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Montenegro, and San Marino. These nations come together to compete in various sports disciplines and foster friendly competition and cultural exchange.

The sports program of the GSSE includes both summer and winter sports, although the winter edition is less frequent and involves fewer sports due to the limited facilities available in some of the participating countries. The summer edition features a wider range of sports disciplines, including athletics, basketball, swimming, table tennis, tennis, volleyball, and more.

The Games of the Small States of Europe aim to provide a platform for athletes from smaller European countries to showcase their skills and compete on an international level. The event promotes friendship, sportsmanship, and cooperation among the participating nations, and it offers an opportunity for these countries to host and organize a major sporting event.

The GSSE follows the Olympic Games model, with an opening ceremony, a series of competitions across different sports, and a closing ceremony. While the event may not have the same scale and global recognition as the Olympics, it holds great significance for the participating nations and serves as a valuable experience for their athletes.

Overall, the Games of the Small States of Europe play a crucial role in promoting sports, fostering international relations, and providing a platform for athletes from smaller European countries to compete and excel in their respective disciplines.
